Team USA splits day’s action at Winter World University Games

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Team USA picked up another win but also suffered a round robin loss as day four came to a close at the 2019 Winter World University Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Led by Northwestern’s Andrew Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), the U.S. team lost 8-5 to Sweden’s Fredrik Nyman before bouncing back to defeat Norway, 9-6.

Stopera and teammates Luc Violette (Edmonds, Wash.), Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) are now 2-4 in the nine-game round robin at Ivan Yarygin Sports Palace.

The U.S. had an early lead over the Swedes but only scored one point in the second half in the 8-5 loss. In the night game against Magnus Ramsfjell’s team, the U.S. had a strong start as they stole three points out of the gates and held off Norway’s late rally when the game got tied after nine ends.

The American men have one game on tap on Thursday as they will take on host Russia (3-3). On Friday, the team will finish the round robin with games against Korea (2-4) and the Czech Republic (3-3). The top six teams advance to Saturday’s playoffs. The top two teams will secure spots in the semifinals while the other four will compete in qualification playoffs to earn berths to the final four.
