Team USA now 3-2 at World Wheelchair Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Steve Emt and Team USA are now 3-2 at the 2019 World Wheelchair Championship after a win and a loss today in Stirling, Scotland.

In the afternoon session, three-time and reigning world champion Rune Lorentsen led his Norwegian team to an 8-5 win over Emt (Hebron, Conn.) and teammates Matthew Thums (Weston, Wis.), David Samsa (Suamico, Wis.), Meghan Lino (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Pam Wilson (Westminster, Colo.).

The U.S. team balanced the day with a 7-5 victory over Russia’s Andrey Smirnov, who also has won the event three times, to improve to 3-2 in the 11-game round robin at The Peak.

Against Russia, the Americans finally secured the last-rock advantage to start the game and used it to score two points as they took the early lead. After two blank ends, Russia tied the game with a deuce in the fourth. The Americans answered with two more in the fifth and the turning point came in the sixth end when the U.S. stole three points. Russia would try to rally – with two points in the seventh and a single steal in the eighth – but the U.S. held on for the 7-5 victory to get back in the win column. The team is now in a five-way tie for third place with six round robin games left to play.

Team USA has two games on tap Wednesday as they will take on host Scotland and China, the 2018 Paralympic champions. To follow along, go to http://www.worldcurling.org/wwhcc2019.
