First senior mens playoff berth confirmed

First playoff berth secured at Senior Men’s National Championship


(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Four-time champion Geoff Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.) secured the first of four possible playoff berths at the 2019 USA Curling Senior Men’s National Championship at the Heather Curling Club in Mapleton, Minn.


Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.) and teammates Mike Fraboni (Lac du Flambeau, Wis.), Dan Wiza (Waunakee, Wis.), Pete Westberg (Woodbury, Minn.), and Todd Birr (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored three points in the seventh end to fuel a 7-3 victory over 2010 world senior champion Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.). Pustovar’s team now drops down to the B side of the bracket for another chance to earn a playoff spot.


At the 2019 USA Curling Senior Women’s National Championship in Portage, Wis., two teams kept their perfect records intact as the third draw of the round robin was completed today at the Portage Curling Club. Defending champion Margie Smith (Shoreview, Minn.) and Tracy Lawless (Hawthorn Hills, Ill.) are currently 3-0 to lead the six-team pack.


Smith and teammates Norma O’Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.) and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) secured an 8-3 win over Kim Wapola’s rink (0-3). Smith went 8-0 to win the senior women’s title last year leaving her current streak at this event at 11 straight wins.


Tracy Lawless and teammates Kathy Pielage (Verona, Wis.), Susan Dukes (Madison, Wis.), and Kristin Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) stole singles in the seventh and eighth ends to force an extra end against 2017 senior women’s champion Patti Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.). Another steal in overtime kept Lawless and Co. undefeated and put Lank’s team at 2-1 halfway through the single round robin. Debra Horn (Burbank, Ohio) led her team into the win column with a 7-6 win over Beth Bohlman (Grand Forks, N.D.). The women return to the ice at 7 tonight.
