Championship final set at 2019 Mixed Doubles National Championship in Seattle

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – After a day of fantastic shooting by both the winning teams and the losing sides, the final for the 2019 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship is set for tomorrow at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle.

A brand new mixed doubles national champion will be crowned on Sunday as Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) battle Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and John Shuster (Superior, Wis.) at 11 a.m. PT.

Standing in the way tonight in the journey to the championship final were past champions and Olympians, however. Christensen and Shuster had to hold their breath as 2016 champions and fellow 2018 Olympians Tabitha Peterson (St. Paul, Minn.) and Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.) had a shot for the win that narrowly missed scoring the necessary points. Christensen and Shuster would prevail, 6-5.

Persinger and Plys had to get past Olympian Nina Roth (McFarland, Wis.) and partner Kroy Nernberger (Madison, Wis.), who placed third in last year’s Olympic Mixed Doubles Team Trials. A couple of big steals late in the game for Persinger and Plys fueled the 8-2 win. Earlier in the day, Christensen and Shuster defeated Olympians Becca Hamilton and Matt Hamilton, also by a 6-5 score. Roth and Nernberger held off the defending champions Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.), 7-5.

The winning team will represent the United States at the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Championship April 20-27 in Stavanger, Norway. The final two pairs feature athletes who normally play together in men’s and women’s competition with Christensen as Persinger’s skip and Shuster leading his team with Plys at vice skip. The Shuster rink is set to represent the U.S. at the World Men’s Championship later this month in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
