U.S. men head to Russia for Winter World University Games
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Fresh off his time on the ice at the 2019 World Junior Championships last week, Andrew Stopera of Northwestern University is set to lead the United States men at the 2019 Winter World University Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, this weekend.
Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) will be teamed up with fellow World Juniors teammates Luc Violette (Edmonds, Wash.) and Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.), along with two-time U.S. junior national champion Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) playing in the second position. Stopera, along with Violette, 19, a student at the University of Washington, and Graem Fenson, 19, a student at Bemidji State University, finished fifth at last week’s World Juniors and have won three straight U.S. junior men’s national titles together. Alex Fenson, 24, finished fourth at the 2019 Men’s National Championship as a member of Team Mark Fenner. Fenson recently graduated from Bemidji State.
The U.S. men will compete in a round robin Sunday through March 8 with the playoffs to follow March 9-10 at the Ivan Yarygin Sports Palace. Live scores will be posted at http://www.krsk2019.com/.
Curling was added to the Winter World University Games (WWUG) in 2005. The U.S. men won gold in 2007 but have since to medal. Great Britain (men) and Canada (women) won gold at the 2017 WWUG in Almaty, Kazakhstan. No U.S. women’s curling team will be competing in this event (nor in 2017).
