2019 Mixed Doubles National Championship underway in Seattle

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The first round of action at the 2019 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship is officially in the books after last night’s opening draw at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle.

Defending champions Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.) continued their solid season as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Jamie Sinclair (Manotick, Ontario) and Sean Beighton (Seattle) last night. The duo eventually would cruise to an 11-4 victory in six ends. Anderson’s twin sister, Taylor Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), and partner Derrick McLean (Seattle) got into the win column in Pool A as well as they scored three points in the final end to defeat the Denver duo of Clare Moores and Lance Wheeler, 8-7.

Tabitha Peterson (Eagan, Minn.) and Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.), the 2016 champions, staged the night’s biggest comeback in an extra-end victory over Nina Roth (McFarland, Wis.) and Kroy Nernberger (Madison, Wis.). Down 0-7 after five ends, Peterson and Polo scored five in the sixth end to get into the game. Roth, a 2018 Olympian, and Nernberger steadily scored two in the seventh end only to have Peterson and Polo put up four points on the scoreboard in the eighth end to force overtime where they would steal the winning points.

In Pool B, Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) got off to a positive start with a narrow 7-6 triumph over 2018 Olympians Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and John Shuster (Superior, Wis.). Fellow 2018 Olympians Becca Hamilton and Matt Hamilton (both of McFarland, Wis.) swept past 2013 champions Maureen Stolt and Pete Stolt (both of Plymouth, Minn.), 12-1.

The round robin continues today with games at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. PT.
