USA women finish eighth at 2019 World Juniors
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Cait Flannery and the U.S. ladies finished eighth at the 2019 World Junior Championships after a 9-5 loss to Norway today in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Flannery (Mankato, Minn.) and teammates Leah Yavarow (Bemidji, Minn.), Lexi Lanigan (Duluth, Minn.), Rebecca Miles (Duluth, Minn.) and Abbey Marquardt (Poynette, Wis.) scored a single in the second end but quickly fell behind after Maia Ramsfjell’s team scored a deuce in the third and then stole three points in the fourth end. The American ladies countered with a deuce in the fifth and a single steal to get back into the game. Norway, however, played a stronger second half and limited the U.S. offense in the eventual 9-5 win.
The 2-7 finish for the U.S. team places them in the bottom three in the standings. That ranking puts the U.S. in a relegation situation for next year’s competition unless the 2020 host is among the ranked countries above them, which would free up an additional spot and only relegate Japan (2-7) and Scotland (1-8). The top six countries from this year’s World Juniors plus the 2020 host (yet to be announced) qualify for the 2020 World Juniors while the bottom three countries can compete in the World Junior B Championships to try to earn a berth to the 2020 World Juniors.
The women’s semifinals will feature China (8-1) taking on Russia (6-3) while Canada (6-3) and Switzerland (6-3) will compete in the other playoff game. The winning teams will advance to Saturday’s gold-medal game while the losing sides will play for bronze. The men’s semifinals will feature Scotland (9-0) taking on Switzerland while Canada (7-2) will battle Norway (6-3). All results are posted at www.worldcurling.org/wjcc2019.
