2019 Mixed Doubles National Championship begins Wednesday in Seattle

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The battle to become Team USA begins Wednesday as the 2019 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship kicks off at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle.

Twelves teams of two will compete in the five-day national event to determine the team to represent the United States at the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Championship April 20-27 in Stavanger, Norway.

Many of the competing mixed doubles athletes will be coming off of a busy week at the Men’s and Women’s National Championships, which concluded Feb. 16, including reigning national champions Jamie Sinclair, Sarah Anderson, Taylor Anderson, Monica Walker, John Shuster, Chris Plys and Matt Hamilton. They also will compete in the upcoming World Women’s and World Men’s Championships.

Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and partner Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.) have had the most successful season so far amongst the competing teams as they won a bronze medal in August in New Zealand, a silver medal at the Curling World Cup in September and won the Qualico Mixed Doubles Classic last month in Banff, Alberta. The duo also won the mixed doubles national title last season and in 2015.

Tabitha Peterson (Eagan, Minn.) and Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.), 2016 mixed doubles champions, just missed out on the playoffs at the second leg of the Curling World Cup in December in Omaha, Neb. The duo, who are the only team to win a medal at the World Mixed Doubles Championship for the U.S., also were runner-up at the Twin Ports Mixed Doubles Classic in November, which was won by Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.).

2018 Olympians Becca Hamilton and Matt Hamilton (both of McFarland, Wis.) won the mixed doubles national title in 2017 and are hungry for another title. The field also includes 2013 champions Maureen Stolt and Pete Stolt (both of Plymouth, Minn.). Monica Walker (St. Paul, Minn.) and Alex Leichter (Boston) qualified by winning the MadTown DoubleDown event in Madison in early November.

Teams will be split into two pools of six teams each for a preliminary round robin. The top three from each pool will advance to the playoffs. The first draw of the competition will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Live scores and a live webstream, in partnership with the United States Olympic Committee and the 12th End Sports Network, of the competition will be posted at www.usacurl.org. To view the full competition schedule, go to https://curlingseattle.org/competitions?event=2019MDNats.
