Catching up with the mustache

Next up in the Gold Medal Q&A series, the second on Team Shuster, and a recent national champion, Matt Hamilton. Hamilton is a McFarland, Wis., native with flair and a taste for a bold fashion.

When did it finally sink in that you had won the gold medal?

It probably hit me that we were winning after we made that shot in the 8th even though the game wasn’t over, but all the other stuff that happens after it is surreal. So, I would say now that life is slowing down everything else is sinking in.

Alright, so my second question, you guys had some pretty interesting white pants situations at the Olympics? Did you guys have any input on your uniforms? Or was that was somebody else?

That was me. The team was not super on board, but we had a pair of grays, blacks and whites, and we had just worn gray the whole time. So I was like like first game, going out against the home crowd of Korea, so let’s go out with something loud and try to have some fun. That was the only game we wore them because we got such a bad reception that teammate Tyler George did not want to wear them. We wore them again at the Continental Cup this year and people were like “nope, you look like a painter.” (Author's note: I thought that the white pants were very slick.)

If you could give your junior curling self any advice or knowledge, what would it be?

Don’t be let down by all of the not winning and things not working out the exact way that you want them to because that’s quittin’ and you’re not a quitter is what I would tell him. And the next thing that I would say is that without the downs and all the trials and adversity the gold medal and the win wouldn’t be nearly as sweet and fulfilling. You’ve got to experience the lows to appreciate the highs.

This questions comes from my teammate Anna, she wants to know is the mustache natural, or do you use product?

Ha! No products. Sometimes I’ll throw in a little bit of beard oil just to give it some shine, but no twists or anything, no wax. Just the occasional beard oil for date night or something.

If you could pick another Olympic sport (summer or winter) to compete in, what would it be and why?

Golf, I love playing it. I just wish I was super good at it. Otherwise beach volleyball would be a riot. It’s definitely my kind of atmosphere being the loud and boisterous one I think I would fit in really well in the beach volleyball community.

What’s it like to be on a team with all Minnesota Vikings fans? How do you deal with it?

It’s brutal. It’s absolutely brutal. Especially this year. The last two or three years I’ve been able to be like 'Oh, the Packers are better, everyone knows it,' and this year they did not make it easy on me.

Keep an eye out for the next installment in our gold-medal series with Olympian Tyler George, vice skip for Team Shuster at the 2018 Olympics.
