USA women advance to playoffs at World Junior B

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Goal No. 1 has been solidified as Cora Farrell and the U.S. women have qualified for the playoffs of the 2020 World Junior B Championships in Lohja, Finland.

Farrell (Fairbanks, Alaska) and her team of Leah Yavarow (Bemidji, Minn.), Cait Flannery (Mankato, Minn.), Allison Howell (Solon, Ohio), and Rebecca Miles (Duluth, Minn.) added another win today as they defeated Turkey’s Mihriban Polat rink, 11-2, in Group A round robin action at Kisakallio Sports Institute. The American ladies had another solid start to their match and built an early 3-0 lead before Turkey scored a point in the third end. The game was essentially sewed up in the fourth end when the U.S. team scored five points to extend the lead. Another three points in the sixth end wrapped things up as the U.S. earned its third victory of the weeklong tournament.

Coupled with yesterday’s 9-1 win over Sara Haidinger’s Austrian team, the American women are 3-1 with one round robin game left to play tomorrow. The three wins has qualified the team to Tuesday’s playoffs. Group leader Italy (4-0) also has secured a spot. Denmark (5-0) has earned the first berth out of Group B.

The U.S. ladies wrap up round robin play on Monday afternoon against Spain (0-4). The top two teams in each of the three groups as well as the best two teams from those ranked third in each group will advance to Tuesday’s qualification playoffs. The top three teams at the end of the competition will earn berths to the 2020 World Junior Championships in February in Siberia.
