Dropkin rink wins Curl Mesabi Cashspiel

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Korey Dropkin’s team kept up its winning ways with a perfect showing at the Curl Mesabi Cashspiel over the weekend in Eveleth, Minn.

Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.) and his team of Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.), Mark Fenner (Bemidji, Minn.) and Tom Howell (Milwaukee, Wis.) went 6-0 and defeated Rich Ruohonen’s rink in the final yesterday by a 4-3 score to earn the World Curling Tour (WCT) event title. The Dropkin team also includes Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and Coach Shawn Rojeski (Hibbing, Minn.). It was the fifth time this season that the Dropkin rink made the playoffs at a major curling tournament and second big win of the season after last month’s Grand Slam Tier 2 history-making victory.

In the women’s division in Eveleth, Tabitha Peterson’s team advanced to the semifinals before losing a 5-4 battle with Canada’s Laura Walker rink. Jamie Sinclair’s team reached the quarterfinals but fell to Peterson’s team, 8-0. Other USA Curling High Performance Program and Junior High Performance Program teams making playoff appearances included the Luc Violette and John Shuster rinks. The young Violette team reached the semifinals where they lost to Dropkin, 8-3. Shuster’s team fell to Scott Dunnam’s team, 5-3, in the quarterfinals.
