USA advances to quarterfinals of World Mixed Doubles Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Team USA’s Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and John Shuster (Superior, Wis.) have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Stavanger, Norway, after a 7-4 win over England this morning at Sørmarka Arena.

The U.S. (7-1) will now take on Estonia (7-1) at 6 p.m. (local time) for a chance to reach Saturday’s semifinals.

Christensen and Shuster had control of most of the match against England’s sibling duo of Anna Fowler and Ben Fowler taking a 2-0 lead after scoring a single in the first and stealing one in the second. England would have a chance for two in the third end to tie the game but didn’t have enough weight on its double takeout attempt as they got on the scoreboard with one.

The U.S. was able to take advantage of a heavy draw from England to draw in for two points in the fourth end. England countered with a draw for two as well in the fifth despite a great start to the end for the U.S. Ben Fowler converted a triple takeout in that end to put England back in control.

The game fully swung in favor of the U.S. in the sixth when they used their power play to set up a big end. Two half shots from England allowed the U.S. to have four stones in play when Anna Fowler delivered a takeout to try to limit the scoring. Christensen, however, was able to chip out the English rock and score three. England didn’t fare as well with its power play attempt as the U.S. took advantage early in the seventh when Ben Fowler’s draw attempt wrecked on a guard to ruin the chance to score multiple points. England would eventually be forced to hit and stay to take just one point. They would then run out of stones in the eighth as the U.S. wrapped up the 7-4 victory to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2016.
