U.S. men move on to quarterfinals at World Senior Championships

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Geoff Goodland and the U.S. men took down Germany this morning to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Senior Championships in Stavanger, Norway.

Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.) and his team of Todd Birr (Ham Lake, Minn.), Pete Westberg (Woodbury, Minn.), Dan Wiza (Waunakee, Wis.), and Mike Fraboni (Lac du Flambeau, Wis.) will now take on Denmark’s Ulrik Schmidt rink – a team they lost to during round robin competition earlier in the week – in today’s quarterfinals at 6 p.m. (local).

Margie Smith and the U.S. ladies will take on Scotland in the women’s qualification playoff at 6 p.m. today as well. Switzerland defeated Sweden, 11-2, to advance to the semifinals in the first women’s qualification playoff earlier today.

Germany’s Uwe Saile rink took the early lead over the U.S. men when they scored three points in the opening end. Goodland responded with three as well to level the scoreboard after two ends. Germany countered with a deuce, but the U.S. men had another three up their sleeves as they took a 6-5 lead. Germany would be held to a single in the fifth and it was all USA after as Goodland’s crew scored two in the sixth and stole four in the seventh to close out the match.
