Team USA perfect at World Mixed Doubles

USA now 2-0 at World Mixed Doubles Championship

 

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Team USA’s Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and John Shuster (Superior, Wis.) continued their winning ways with a 9-3 victory today at the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Stavanger, Norway.

 

The Duluth Curling Club duo grabbed the hammer to start the game and went out strong with three points in the opening end. The U.S. team, which shot 86 percent on the day, stole three in the second end before Latvia’s Santa Blumberga and Ritvars Gulbis scored a single point in the third end to crack into the lead. The Latvia duo followed up with a single steal only to have the U.S. score two points in the fifth end and steal a point in the sixth end as the Americans continued to dominate. Latvia would be forced to draw into the four-foot just to score one in the seventh end and offered the handshake to concede the match.

 

The U.S. team (2-0 in Group F) will take on Greece (0-2) in the 8 a.m. draw on Monday morning as they work their way through the seven-game round robin.

About the event:

The World Mixed Doubles Championship debuted in 2008 in Vierumaki, Finland. Since then Switzerland has won seven of 11 world titles, including last year when they defeated Russia for the gold medal. The highest U.S. finish was in 2016 when the Americans won bronze.
