Three playoff appearances highlight HPP team efforts

Two runner-up finishes, Grand Slam playoff appearance highlight U.S. performances

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Mark Fenner led his team to a third World Curling Tour event final this season, Andrew Stopera’s junior team advanced to final of a U21 competition and John Shuster’s rink made the playoffs at the Grand Slam to highlight Team USA’s performances over the weekend.

Fenner (Bemidji, Minn.) and teammates Tom Howell (Milwaukee, Wis.), Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.), and Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) gave up a steal in the final end to fall to Ontario’s John Willsey rink on Sunday afternoon at the Huron ReproGraphics Oil Heritage Classic in Sarnia, Ontario. The team went 6-2 in the runner-up finish. In the quarterfinals, the team defeated Rich Ruohonen’s fellow High Performance Program team. Ruohonen’s rink finished with a 4-3 record.

Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and teammates Luc Violette (Lake Stevens, Wash.), Ben Richardson (Issaquah, Wash.), Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.), and Riley Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) advanced to the final of the OVCA Brokerlink U21 Junior Superspiel in Ottawa. Winnipeg’s JT Ryan rink scored the needed point in the 10th end to win the final after Stopera’s team stole a point in the ninth end to tie the game. Cait Flannery’s junior team went 2-3 in the women’s division.

Shuster (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), and John Landsteiner (Duluth, Minn.) reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam of Curling’s Canadian Beef Masters in Truro, Nova Scotia, after going 3-1 in pool play. The team would fall to Scotland’s Bruce Mouat rink, 9-3, in the opening round of the playoffs. Nina Roth’s team forced a tiebreaker match in an effort to reach the playoffs but fell to Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey rink, 6-3. Jamie Sinclair’s team was 1-3 overall.

The focus this week turns to mixed doubles as the MadTown DoubleDown Mixed Doubles Bonspiel takes place in Madison, Wis., featuring many of the members of the HPP. Chase Sinnett’s junior team will head to the KW Junior Classic in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
