USA sweeps past Brazil at 2018 World Mixed Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Evan Workin and Team USA picked up a second straight win as they swept past Brazil on Wednesday night at the 2018 Winn Rentals World Mixed Curling Championship in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

Workin (Fargo, N.D.) and his team of Rachel Workin (Fargo, N.D.), Jordan Brown (Elk River, Minn.), and Christina Lammers (Fargo, N.D.) improved to 3-4 in the round robin standings with the 10-2 victory over Anne Shibuya’s Brazilian rink.

“I think we found our draw weight early, which is something we’ve been up and down on,” Evan Workin said. “We got our rocks in a better position in front of the house so that really helped. It puts you in a better spot to make some easier shots for yourself at the end for the end, that’s for sure.”

This was the second straight win for the U.S. team, which, unfortunately was knocked out of playoff contention earlier in the week.

“It’s interesting, you talk about certain game plays and you have a certain plan you want to have. You think you can just go out there and play, but if you don’t follow the game plan you set forth, these other teams do. They have a set way of doing things and they don’t waiver from it – they make you pay if you vary from that,” Evan Workin said.

The U.S. team stole the first four ends of the match against Brazil to build a 7-0 lead at the halfway mark. Brazil got on the scoreboard with a deuce in the fifth but would not score again in the lopsided loss.

“We did that earlier in the week and we lost some focus,” Workin said about scoring a lot of points early on in a match. “As the game went on when you get up big early on it is tough, you’re looking around the room to see what else is going on, but I think this one we stayed more mentally in the game. We learned from that past experience, and we definitely finished that one out strong.”

The Americans will finish out the round robin this morning against Switzerland (5-2). Russia (6-1) continues to lead Group B and has secured a playoff berth. Scotland (7-0) and Turkey (6-1) have earned playoff spots out of Group A while the Czech Republic (6-1) leads Group C. In Group D, Canada (5-1) and Norway (5-1) have both secured spots in the next round. To view full standings, go to
