Switzerland ends USA’s run at 2018 World Mixed Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Evan Workin and Team USA were hoping to end the 2018 Winn Rentals World Mixed Curling Championship on a winning note but with playoff hopes on the line for Switzerland, it wasn’t the conclusion the American team hoped for as they wrapped up the round robin in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

Workin (Fargo, N.D.) and his team of Rachel Workin (Fargo, N.D.), Jordan Brown (Elk River, Minn.), and Christina Lammers (Fargo, N.D.) finished the event with a 3-5 record after the 9-5 loss to Mario Freiberger’s rink in Group B action this morning at the Kelowna Curling Club.

“We learned a lot,” said Evan Workin, who was competing in his first world championship. “As I said earlier, having a plan and sticking to it. We were playing against the best teams in the world and you just have to play the way you know how to and just be mechanically sound.”

Switzerland stole three points to open the match, but the American team leveled the score in the second end and took the lead with a single steal in the third. The Swiss poured on three more points in the fourth end and turned the game’s momentum into a victory – and playoff berth.

Switzerland (6-2), Denmark (6-1) and Russia (7-1) secured Round of 16 playoff spots from Group B. Scotland (8-0), Germany (6-2) and Turkey (6-2) clinched spots from Group A while the Czech Republic (6-1) and Spain (6-1) gained positions from Group C. In Group D, Canada (6-1) and Norway (5-1) will make a run at this year’s medals. The playoffs get underway Friday and continue into the weekend. To learn more, go to

“We’re going to gear up for this again next year and when we talked about it, no one could have said yes quicker,” Evan Workin said. “It was a great experience coming here and I think we can take that forward into the next year.”
