USA slips to 1-2 at 2018 World Mixed Championship
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Australia stole the eighth end to hand Evan Workin and the U.S. team a second loss at the 2018 Winn Rentals World Mixed Curling Championship on Sunday in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
Workin (Fargo, N.D.) and his team of Rachel Workin (Fargo, N.D.), Jordan Brown (Elk River, Minn.), and Christina Lammers (Fargo, N.D.) had a strong start against Australia’s Matt Panoussi rink – pulling ahead quickly with scores of three points and four points in the early ends to build a 7-2 lead. However, the Americans would be kept off the scoreboard as the Aussies rattled off six points over the final four ends to win 8-7.
“I think we tried to switch to a more defensive game, and our hits weren’t quite there with the line-calling and all that,” Rachel Workin said. “It slowly slipped away from us. Finally, we had to force Evan to throw a couple draws there, and he hadn’t thrown a draw in a few ends. He just really couldn’t figure out the weight there.”
The U.S. team picked up their first win on Saturday night as they cruised past the Netherlands, 10-2. The Americans started off well with a deuce in the opening end and had a key steal of three points in the fourth end to break open the game. Four more points in the seventh end put the game away as Thomas Levi Kooi offered the handshake.
“We put some stuff together. We like to hit, and we were in a position where we got to hit around a little bit more, which is nice,” Workin said after the lopsided win over the Netherlands. “It feels good to get the first one out of the way. Hopefully, smooth sailing from here.”
The U.S. team returns to the ice on today to take on Russia (2-0) at 12 p.m. PT.
