U.S. teams win St. Paul Cashspiel titles

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Two teams from the U.S. Junior High Performance Program (HPP) walked away with the St. Paul Let’s Cure Lupus Cashspiel titles on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn.

Teams led by Annmarie Dubberstein (Portage, Wis.) and Andrew Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) continued their solid starts to the season by capturing the World Curling Tour event titles at the St. Paul Curling Club.

Dubberstein, a student at the University of Minnesota, and her team of Cora Farrell (Fairbanks, Alaska), Jenna Burchesky (Walpole, Mass.), and Allison Howell (Solon, Ohio) defeated 2010 Olympian Allison Pottinger, 6-3, to finish the weekend with a 5-1 record. Stopera, a student at Northwestern University, and teammates Luc Violette (Lake Stevens, Wash.), Ben Richardson (Issaquah, Wash.), and Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) got past Mark Fenner’s High Performance Program team, 6-1, in the final. Fenner’s team finished 5-2 for their second second-place finish of the young Tour season. Rich Ruohonen’s team went 3-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals as did Chase Sinnett’s junior HPP team. Cait Flannery’s rink finished with a 1-3 record.

Jamie Sinclair’s team fought hard through the C event but came up a win short of advancing to the playoffs of the Curlers Corner Autumn Gold Curling Classic in Calgary, Alberta. Cory Christensen’s team went 1-3. John Shuster’s rink was 0-3 at the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard. Team Shuster returns to the ice this weekend at the Canad Inns Classic Men’s Classic in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Ruohonen’s team also will compete at this event.
