Persinger-Plys qualify to 2019 Mixed Doubles National Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) have qualified to compete in the 2019 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship after winning the Twin Ports Mixed Doubles Cashspiel today in Duluth, Minn.

Persinger, 26, and Plys, 31, stole the final four ends to defeat 2018 Olympians and 2016 world mixed doubles bronze medalists Tabitha Peterson (St. Paul, Minn.) and Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.), 8-4, at the Duluth Curling Club. Persinger and Plys defeated Olympic champion John Shuster (Superior, Wis.) and 2018 Olympian Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) in the semifinal earlier today by an 8-7 score. The duo would go 6-1 en route to the Twin Ports title.

Persinger and Plys join three other teams already qualified to the national event, including 2018 Olympians Becca Hamilton and Matt Hamilton (both of McFarland, Wis.), 2018 mixed doubles national champions Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.), and Monica Walker (St. Paul, Minn.) and Alex Leichter (Boston), who qualified earlier this month by winning the MadTown DoubleDown event in Madison, Wis.

The 12-team Mixed Doubles National Championship will take place Feb. 27-March 3 at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle. The remaining eight teams will qualify via World Curling Tour rankings as of Nov. 30 or the Mixed Doubles Challenge Round next month in Grand Forks, N.D.
