Walker-Leichter qualify to 2019 Mixed Doubles National Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Boston natives Monica Walker and Alex Leichter secured one of 12 spots to compete in the 2019 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship after winning the MadTown DoubleDown Mixed Doubles event today in Madison, Wis.

The two grew up in the same curling club in the Boston area and now will have a chance to represent the U.S. at this season’s World Mixed Doubles Championship in Norway. The duo defeated Manitoba’s Shannon Birchard and Catlin Schneider, 6-5, in today’s final and finished with a perfect 6-0 record.

They now join two other teams already qualified to the championship, including 2018 Olympians Becca Hamilton and Matt Hamilton (both of McFarland, Wis.) and 2018 mixed doubles national champions Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.).

The 12-team Mixed Doubles National Championship will take place Feb. 27-March 3 at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle. The next opportunity to earn a berth will be later this month at the Twin Ports Mixed Doubles Cashspiel on Thanksgiving weekend in Duluth, Minn.
