Playoff push underway at 2018 Arena National Championships

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The final push to make the playoff round of the 2018 USA Curling Arena National Championships is in high gear in Salt Lake City.

Five berths have been secured already after this morning’s and last night’s round robin results. In the women’s division, Sarah Wruck’s team from Kansas City and Monica Hernandez’s rink from the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club have locked in playoff spots. Wruck (Kansas City, Mo.) and teammates Kristy Filippini (Shawnee, Kan.), Stacy Foree (Oak Grove, Mo.), and DeeAnn Moore (Kansas City, Mo.) defeated Liza Beres and her Hollywood teammates, 6-3, to improve to 3-0 in Pool C.  Hernandez and teammates Heather Kopeck, Erin McInrue, and Kristina Lugo (all of Oakland, Calif.) shut out Paula Bloom’s Colorado rink, 8-0, to also improve to 3-0 and win their division. The top two teams from each division will advance to the women’s playoffs. The overall top two will earn first-round playoff byes and qualify directly to Sunday morning’s semifinals.

In the men’s division, Dallas-Fort Worth, Wine Country and Hollywood have earned spots in Saturday’s quarterfinals. All three teams picked up wins last night to lock in playoff appearances. After the conclusion of the round robin tonight, the top two teams from each division qualify to the playoffs. Jeff Knott (Dallas) and teammates Kevin Roberts (Frisco, Texas), Laith Sando (Burleson, Texas), Nick Myers (Arlington, Texas), John Lambert (Garland, Texas) won the title in 2015 and went through the round robin with a perfect 4-0 record after posting a 10-2 win over Cornell Brown’s Utah Olympic Oval team. David Markowski and his Wine Country team of Camren Spangler (Meadow Vista, Calif.), William Hillman (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), and Brian Feldman (Sacramento, Calif.) earned their playoff berth after picking up an 8-4 victory over Lone Star.

In Pool D, Hollywood’s Parker Shook (North Hollywood, Calif.), Cameron Ross (Glendale, Calif.), Daniel McCarthy (Los Angeles), and Benedict Yoong (Ventura, Calif.) defeated 2016 champion Mark Robinson and his Pittsburgh team, 8-4, to stay perfect. The men’s teams return to the ice this afternoon. The round robin continues through tonight with the playoffs scheduled on Saturday afternoon. If needed, tiebreaker games will take place on Saturday morning.
