Round robin continues at 2018 Arena Nationals

Round robin of 2018 Arena National Championships continues in Salt Lake City


(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Another full day of competition is on tap at the 2018 USA Curling Arena National Championships with two draws already completed in Salt Lake City.


In morning action at the Utah Olympic Oval, Jeff Knott’s Dallas-Fort Worth rink improved to 3-0 in Pool A as they handed Keefe Davis and his St. Louis Curling Club team its first round-robin loss by a 6-4 score. In Pool B, Chris Hofland and his La Crosse teammates improved to 2-1 with a 10-3 triumph over Long Island’s John Paccione team. In Pool C competition, Lone Star’s Guy Davis rink improved to 1-1 with a 9-5 win over Kansas City. Aberdeen’s Mark Tolvstad rink earned its first win as they got past Mark Robinson’s Pittsburgh team by scoring four points in the seventh end. In Pool D, Palmetto’s Daniel Fort rink stole points late in the game to secure its first win of the competition as they defeated Murray Marple’s Cedar Rapids foursome, 8-3.


Eight women’s teams took the ice for the afternoon session with the San Francisco Bay Area ladies keeping their record perfect in Pool B with a 6-4 victory over Monique Penney’s team from Cincinnati. Monica Hernandez and teammates Heather Kopeck, Erin McInrue, and Kristina Lugo (all of Oakland, Calif.) broke open a close match in the fifth end when they scored three points. The California team will have a key showdown tomorrow morning against Broadmoor, which is also undefeated. In other Pool B action, Hollywood II’s Donna Umali Mendoza rink used steals to defeat Lone Star, 9-3.


In Pool A, Wine Country’s Katie Feldman rink improved to 2-1 with a 7-5 win over Cleveland Skating Club’s Kathryn Mercer rink. Those two teams are currently tied for first place. Melissa Majchrzak skipped the hometown team to its first win as the Utah Olympic Oval stole the final two ends to defeat Cedar Rapids, 7-4.


In the lone men’s afternoon session, Vikingland’s Troy Dittberner rink led his team to an 11-0 shutout of Circle City’s Matt James as they improved to 2-1 in Pool D.
