2018 Arena Nationals kick off in Salt Lake City

2018 Arena National Championships underway in Salt Lake City

 

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Utah Governor and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney threw out the ceremonial first stone to kick off the 2018 USA Curling Arena National Championships yesterday at the Utah Olympic Oval.

 

The first two draws of the six-day event featuring 20 men’s and 15 women’s teams were completed last night in Salt Lake City. In men’s competition, nine games took place. In Pool A action, Jeffrey’s Knott’s team from Dallas-Fort Worth secured a 10-3 triumph over Jonathan Penney’s Cincinnati rink. T. Keefe Davis led his St. Louis rink to a 10-2 victory over Jason Burge’s team from Bend, Ore. In Pool B, Park City’s Greg Basrak defeated Long Island’s John Paccione, 10-5, by scoring four points in the final end. San Francisco’s Richard Lazarowich rink held off Chris Hofland’s La Crosse team, 7-5.

 

In Pool C, past champion Mark Robinson led his Pittsburgh team to an 8-4 victory over Lone Star’s Guy Davis with a steal of five points in the sixth end. Wine Country’s David Markowski led his California rink to a 7-4 win over Aberdeen’s Mark Tolvstad. Parker Shook’s Hollywood Curling Club team stole three points in the eighth end to defeat Vikingland’s Troy Dittberner in Pool D competition. Murray Marple’s Cedar Rapids team scored four points twice to defeat Circle City, 10-7.

 

Just two women’s games took place last night as round robin action got underway in the three pools. Liana Knott’s Dallas-Fort Worth rink got past Wine Country’s Katie Feldman, 7-4, while Cleveland Skating Club’s Kathryn Mercer rink defeated the host club from the Utah Olympic Oval, 13-3.
