Team Sinclair captures 2018 Women’s National Championship title

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – For the second straight year, Jamie Sinclair’s team is at the top of the podium after a perfect week at the 2018 USA Curling National Championships in Fargo, N.D.

Sinclair (St. Paul, Minn.) and her team of Alex Carlson (St. Paul, Minn.), Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska), and Monica Walker (St. Paul, Minn.) delivered a game-winning draw into the four-foot to punch their tickets to represent the U.S. at the 2018 World Women’s Championship March 17-25 in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. The team is coached by Scott Baird (Bemidji, Minn.).

“Just so much pride in this team for how we managed to rebound after a pretty devastating November. But, we played great in the U.S. Open, great in Bern as runner-up and then we had a Slam to practice playing on championship ice like this. Then we come here and go undefeated, so I couldn’t be more proud of the team with how we rebounded from November,” Sinclair said about the tough Olympic Trials loss.

This is the third national title for Carlson, who also won in 2017 and 2015, and second for the rest of the team after winning the title together last year in Everett, Wash.

Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), Jenna Martin (Wauwatosa, Wis.), and Taylor Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) conclude the week at Scheels Arena with their best finish at the Women’s Nationals in earning the silver medals. The team is coached by Phill Drobnick (Eveleth, Minn.).

“It was a good ending to a good year,” Christensen said. “I’m happy with the girls for battling through. We didn’t have the Trials that we wanted to have but they battled through it. They really came out and played phenomenal this week and I’m proud of the team for sticking with it.”

Christensen’s team stole a point in the opening end, but Team Sinclair took two in the second and stole a point in the third to take back the game’s momentum. Team Christensen answered with a deuce and held Sinclair’s team to a single in the sixth end.

The teams would exchange singles for the next four ends with Christensen putting the pressure on Team Sinclair in the 10th end. With a stone on the button and a guard in place, Team Christensen was in good shape to steal. Christensen’s final guard left a big enough opening in the four-foot, however, for Sinclair to draw down into for the win.

“It was a back and forth game. The first end didn’t go our way, obviously. We had the hammer and I came up light on my draw to give up that steal. I was a little nervous after that for sure but bounced back with a great shot in the second end,” Sinclair said. “Finally, we came home tied with hammer and that’s a great situation to be in. We had a couple of missed shots, so we were kind of in a little bit of a pickle there. I’m just super proud of everyone on the team, especially the sweepers judging that last rock. I threw it a little bit hot out of hand, but I’m super proud of them for judging it correctly and making the shot.”

Team Sinclair shot 85 percent in securing their undefeated streak through the 2018 National Championships.

“We went out there with a pretty aggressive strategy today, and I think it worked pretty well. It was a really back and forth game,” Sarah Anderson said. “We were trying to put a lot of pressure on Jamie to make a lot of shots. It was a really fun game and think we were really sharp. They played great, too, and it was definitely a good game.”

Line score, women’s final:

*Jamie Sinclair                 021 001 010 1 – 6

Cory Christensen            100 200 101 0 – 5
