American men to play for bronze medal at 2018 World Juniors

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Andrew Stopera and the American men will play for the bronze medal at the 2018 World Junior Championships after an 8-5 semifinal loss to Canada today in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and his team of Luc Violette (Lake Stevens, Wash.), Ben Richardson (Issaquah, Wash.), Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.), and Jonathon Harstad (Duluth, Minn.) will take on Switzerland at 2 p.m. (local) on Saturday in the bronze-medal matchup. The Swiss men lost to undefeated Scotland, 5-4, in the other semifinal at Curl Aberdeen.

In the women’s playoff action, Sweden got past Norway, 9-3, while Canada bested China, 9-7, to set up the gold-medal showdown between the undefeated Swedes and Canadians. Follow the webstream at and live scores at

The American men never had the lead in their semifinal game against Tyler Tardi’s team as Canada patiently waited to get on the scoreboard in the third end with three points. The U.S. answered with a deuce but allowed Canada to score two in the fifth and steal a point in the sixth end. The Americans tried to close the gap as they took three points over the next two ends but Canada would score another deuce in the ninth to sew up the win.

“Those three points in the third end were a little unexpected actually,” Tardi said. “We didn't really see that coming, but obviously we’re happy with that start to the game against a good team and how it turned out.”

Stopera’s team will be going for the third straight World Juniors medal for Team USA. Stopera’s team, which is coached by Mark Lazar (Toledo, Ohio), earned silver last year in South Korea while the U.S. also took silver in 2016.

USA semifinal line score:

*Canada             003 021 002 x – 8

USA men            000 200 120 x – 5

*last rock in first end
