One more tiebreaker game needed to determine playoff field

Playoffs nearly set at 2018 Mixed Doubles Championship in Eau Claire


(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – One more draw will be played today to determine the eight playoff teamsof the 2018 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship in Eau Claire, Wis.


The round robin came to a close this morning with three tiebreaker games needed to be played to determine the quarterfinalists at the Eau Claire Curling Club.


The top two teams in each of the four pools secure playoff spots. In Pool A, Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.) and Audrey Foote (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and Blake Hagberg (New Hartford, N.Y.) finished with identical 4-1 records to reach the playoffs. In Pool B, Jessica Schultz (Richfield, Minn.) and Derrick McLean (Bothell, Wash.) finished 5-0 while Lexi Lanigan and Quinn Evenson (both of Duluth, Minn.) were 4-1 to qualify.


In Pool C, Maureen Stolt and Pete Stolt (both of Plymouth, Minn.), the 2013 champions, finished with a perfect 4-0 record. Two teams ended up tied for the second playoff spot and played in a tiebreaker today at noon. Clare Moores (Denver) and Lance Wheeler (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) defeated Logan Tingley (Celina, Ohio) and Ryan O’Neil (Columbus, Ohio), 8-1, to advance to tonight’s playoffs.


In Pool D, Christine McMakin (St. Paul, Minn.) and Riley Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) finished 4-0 to secure the top spot. Three teams were tied for the second spot so two rounds of tiebreaker games will be played to determine the final playoff team. Taylor Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Hunter Clawson would go on to defeat Harley Rohrbacher (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Guy Davis (Austin, Texas), 12-0, and will now take on Kim Rhyme (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Jason Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) at 4 today with the winners advancing. The quarterfinals will begin at 8 tonight.


The winning team will represent the U.S. at the 2018 World Mixed Doubles Championship April 21-28 in Ostersund, Sweden. Live scores, standings and athlete information will be posted at
