Teams head to Canada and New Zealand as new season begins

U.S. teams hit the road as 2018-19 season is underway

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Members of USA Curling’s High Performance Program (HPP) will head out to Canada and New Zealand as a new season gets underway.

Prepared to continue its strong showing on the international scene after a historical year last season, the U.S. teams begin the year at the Goldeline Icebreaker at The Granite in Winnipeg and the New Zealand Winter Games.

The John Shuster and Cory Christensen rinks will begin competition Friday in Winnipeg ( while the American mixed doubles team of Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.) begin play in Naseby on Saturday. Follow the New Zealand action at and

Shuster (Superior, Wis.) and his team of Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), and John Landsteiner (Duluth, Minn.) begin the season ranked No. 13 in the world. Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) has a new lineup with Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska), Jenna Martin (Wauwatosa, Wis.), and Madison Bear (Pardeeville, Wis.). Christensen begins the season ranked No. 18.

The U.S. wheelchair team already has a win under its belt from competition in July at the Cape Cod International Summerspiel in Falmouth, Mass. The U.S. team of Steve Emt (Hebron, Conn.), Kirk Black (San Antonio, Texas), Matthew Thums (Wausau, Wis.), and Pam Wilson (Westminster, Colo.). defeated a Canadian rink to win the title. The U.S. junior HPP teams have already completed two camps and begin competition in early September.
