USA teams keep up winning ways at World Senior Championships
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Team USA’s Margie Smith and Jeff Wright rinks are collectively 3-0 at the 2018 World Senior Championships after solid wins in round robin action in Ostersund, Sweden.
Smith (Shoreview, Minn.) and teammates Norma O’Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) took down past Olympic and world champion Anette Norberg of Sweden this morning, 5-3, to improve to 2-0 in the women’s Yellow Group standings at Ostersund Arena.
Jeff Wright and the American men took to the ice on Saturday night and earned a 6-3 victory over Finland’s Jussi Uusipaavalniemi rink.
“Good start. We’re happy with that,” Wright said after the win. “It’s good to get one out of the way and it was fun to do that one. It’s nice to get onto the ice, it’s been a while since we’ve been here and just to get our legs underneath us and play a game.”
Wright (Libertyville, Ill.) and his team of Russ Armstrong (Lake Bluff, Ill.), Sean Silver (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), and Russ Brown (Lake Forest, Ill.) took control of the game in the second half after trailing 3-2. A key deuce in the sixth end coupled with a steal of two in the seventh helped the U.S. team secure the victory.
“They played very well, and it just happened to go our way. We didn’t play the best we can play, we’re just getting started, but we can definitely build from that and keep going,” Wright said.
The American ladies trailed Sweden 3-1 at the halfway mark but scored four points in the final three ends to earn the victory.
The U.S. men are idle today but return to the ice on Monday to take on Norway (1-0) while the women have two round robin games. In the morning session they will take on Japan (1-1) and face Canada (2-0) in the evening. Live scores and updated standings are posted at http://www.worldcurling.org/wscc2018.
