Shuster rink makes another playoff appearance on World Curling Tour

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – John Shuster marched his team into the playoffs of a World Curling Tour (WCT) event for the third time this season as another successful week of Tour competition concluded on Monday.

Shuster (Superior, Wis.) and teammates Tyler George (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), John Landsteiner (Duluth, Minn.), and Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.) finished with a 3-3 record at the Canad Inns Classic in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, after a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Reid Carruthers of Canada.

Several U.S. athletes switched gears to mixed doubles as the Granite Curling Club in Seattle hosted the Pacific Northwest Mixed Doubles event. USA’s Jamie Sinclair (St. Paul, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Duluth, Minn.) advanced to the championship final but a fantastic shot by opponent Jason Gunnlaugson of Canada to remove four stones put the game in his team’s favor as Gunnlaugson and Shannon Birchard defeated the Americans, 6-5. Sinclair and Dropkin finished with a 5-2 overall record. The duos of Olympian Jason Smith and Monica Walker (both of St. Paul, Minn.) and Sarah Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Sean Beighton (Seattle) advanced to the quarterfinals.

The U.S. ladies HPP teams return to the ice this weekend as Cory Christensen, Nina Roth and Jamie Sinclair lead their teams in Manitoba. Heath McCormick and Craig Brown head to Quebec for the ARENA Challenge de Curling de Gatineau in Buckingham. U.S. junior HPP teams skipped by Nick Connolly (Seattle) and Cora Farrell (Fairbanks, Alaska) head to the U21 Crystal Slam in Ottawa.

Results for U.S. HPP teams will be posted each week at
