USA secures playoff berth at 2017 World Mixed Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Hunter Clawson and Team USA clinched their spot in tomorrow’s playoffs in dramatic fashion today at the 2017 World Mixed Curling Championship in Champery, Switzerland.

Clawson (Clarksville, Md.) and teammates Emily Anderson (Broomall, Pa.), Caleb Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Lexi Lanigan (Duluth, Minn.) needed two chances to secure their fourth win and grab a playoff spot. When Latvia’s Janis Rudzitis rink tied the game in the eighth end, an extra end was necessary. The U.S. team needed to convert a takeout and keep their stone in the rings to score a point but their rock rolled out and the end was blanked to force a second end of extra play. A similar shot was set up in the 10th but this time the American stone stayed in the rings to score the winning point – and secure the Americans a playoff spot.

“That was actually the best curling game we’ve played all week, and they played really well, too,” Hunter Clawson said. “We had good strategy, good execution, but there’s a lot we can still improve on. For me, it was the most comfortable curling game we’ve played.”

The Americans will await the conclusion of the round robin today at the Palladium de Champéry to find out its opponent in the Round of 16 Playoffs on Friday. The World Mixed Championship began in 2015. The U.S. finished fifth that year and followed up with a ninth-place finish at last year’s championship in Russia.

“After this game, I’m feeling way more confident,” said Hunter Clawson, 21, a college student. “It’s really nice to be playing well and having it all together. If we can just improve a few more things I’m pretty confident of our chances.”

Two rounds of Last 16 playoff games will take place on Friday followed by quarterfinal games. The semifinals will be staged Saturday with the medal games following in the afternoon.
