USA drops to 3-2 at 2017 World Mixed Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Team USA suffered its second loss of the 2017 World Mixed Curling Championship as Sweden swept past Hunter Clawson’s rink today in Champery, Switzerland.

Clawson (Clarksville, Md.) and teammates Emily Anderson (Broomall, Pa.), Caleb Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Lexi Lanigan (Duluth, Minn.) drop to 3-2 overall after the 9-1 loss to Isabella Wranaa’s Swedish rink at the Palladium de Champéry.

The win improved the Swedes to 5-0 and secured them a playoff berth. “It’s always fun to know that you’ve made the playoffs, but we still have one game left in the round-robin against China so we’re going to focus on that one first, then we can think about the playoffs,” Wranaa said after the win. “That just confirms to us that we know the ice now and that we can put the stones where we want them. We know the USA guys can play better than they did today too, so we had a bit of luck on our side as well.”

While the Americans began today’s match with the last-rock advantage, it was Sweden that scored in the first two ends to quickly take a 5-0 lead. It was an uphill battle after that for the U.S. team as they only mustered a single point in the third end. The Americans will close out the round robin portion on Thursday against Latvia (2-3).

China (4-1) also secured a playoff spot out of Group B. The top three countries from each pool plus the country with the best Draw Shot Challenge (DSC) score of the teams ranked fourth in each pool will advance to the Round of 16 playoffs. The U.S. is seeking its first medal at this world championship, which began in 2015. In the other four pools, the following countries have earned playoff spots: Russia, Korea, Scotland, Canada, Poland, and Turkey. Russia is the defending champion.
