USA earns another win in Switzerland

Team USA splits day at 2017 World Mixed Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – After a resounding win in the morning, Team USA’s Hunter Clawson rink lost in an extra end to China as the third day of the 2017 World Mixed Curling Championship came to a close in Champery, Switzerland.

Clawson (Clarksville, Md.) and teammates Emily Anderson (Broomall, Pa.), Caleb Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Lexi Lanigan (Duluth, Minn.) are now 2-1 in the six-game round robin at the Palladium de Champéry.

The U.S. team started out the day with a strong win over Brazil’s Marcelo Mello rink. The Americans nearly scored a perfect end in the second when they scored seven points. After that the U.S. was well in control as they rolled to a 13-2 victory.

In the afternoon session, the U.S. faced China’s Sijia Liu rink and were chasing the Chinese on the scoreboard for the full game. The Americans scored two in the final end of regulation to force overtime where the Chinese scored a single for the win.

The U.S. returns to round robin action on Monday to take on Belarus (0-2).

The round robin continues through Thursday. Two rounds of Last 16 playoff games will take place on Friday followed by quarterfinal games. The semifinals will be staged Oct. 14 with the medal games following in the afternoon. Russia is the defending champion after winning gold over Sweden last fall in Kazan, Russia.

Monday: 8 p.m., USA v. Belarus

Wednesday: 12 p.m., USA v. Sweden

Thursday: 8 a.m., USA v. Latvia

Two rounds of Last 16 playoff games will take place on Friday followed by quarterfinal games. The semifinals will be staged Saturday with the medal games following in the afternoon.
