World Mixed Championship begins Friday in Switzerland

Team USA looking for medal at 2017 World Mixed Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Team USA’s Hunter Clawson rink is set to compete in the third World Mixed Championship as the event gets underway Friday in Champery, Switzerland.

Clawson’s team includes Emily Anderson (Broomall, Pa.), Caleb Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Lexi Lanigan (Duluth, Minn.). The team is coached by Wayne Anderson (Broomall, Pa.). A record 38 countries will compete in the weeklong championship. The Clawson rink qualified by winning the 2017 USA Curling Mixed National Championship back in March. This will be the first World Championship experience for all four members of Team USA.

The World Mixed Curling Championship is an open entry event for all World Curling Federation (WCF) Member Associations. Each association can enter one mixed team consisting of two female and two male athletes. Unlike men’s and women’s curling no alternates are used.

The U.S. team will compete in Group B for the preliminary round robin. Here is how the groups are made up:

Group A: Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Japan, defending champions Russia, Slovenia and Wales
Group B: Belarus, Brazil, France, Italy, Latvia, Sweden, and USA
Group C: Denmark, Spain, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Korea, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Scotland
Group D: Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong, Israel, Norway, hosts Switzerland, and Slovakia
Group E: Australia, Canada, China, England, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Turkey

The round robin begins Friday with the first of 26 sessions. Two rounds of Last 16 playoff games will take place on Oct. 13 followed by quarterfinal games. The semifinals will be staged Oct. 14 with the medal games following in the afternoon. Russia is the defending champion after winning gold over Sweden last fall in Kazan, Russia.

Sunday, Oct. 8: 8 a.m., USA v. Brazil

Sunday, Oct. 8: 4 p.m., USA v. Italy

Monday, Oct. 9: 8 p.m., USA v. Belarus

Wednesday, Oct. 11: 12 p.m., USA v. Sweden

Thursday, Oct. 12: 8 a.m., USA v. Latvia
