Sinclair rink reaches quarterfinals at Grand Slam in Saskatchewan

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Jamie Sinclair’s team advanced to the playoffs of the Masters of Curling Grand Slam competition to highlight U.S. High Performance Program (HPP) team performances over the weekend.

Sinclair (St. Paul, Minn.) and her team of Alex Carlson (St. Paul, Minn.), Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Monica Walker (St. Paul, Minn.) lost to eventual champion and 2014 Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Jones of Canada in an extra end to bow out of the quarterfinals on Saturday in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. The team finished with a 3-3 overall record and is currently ranked No. 15 on the World Curling Tour Order of Merit. John Shuster’s team finished with a 1-3 record in the men’s division in Lloydminster. Shuster’s team is the top-ranked U.S. men’s team at No. 18.

At the Huron Reprographics Oil Heritage Classic in Sarnia, Ontario, Brady Clark’s U.S. men’s team took their undefeated record into the playoffs and finished runner-up to world champion Glenn Howard of Canada after a 5-3 loss in the final on Sunday. Todd Birr’s U.S. team advanced to the playoffs as well before falling to Clark’s rink in the quarterfinals. Two HPP men’s teams also competed but did not reach the playoffs, including Heath McCormick (2-3) and Craig Brown (1-3). Shuster, Clark, Birr, Brown and McCormick are the five teams qualified to compete in next week’s 2018 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Curling in Omaha, Neb.

On the women’s side, the HPP teams skipped by Nina Roth (McFarland, Wis.) and Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) both finished 2-2 at the Gord Carroll Curling Classic in Whitby, Ontario, to just miss out on playoff berths. Two junior HPP teams also competed in Ontario at the BrokerLink OVCA U21 Superspiel in Ottawa. Andrew Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Madison Bear (Pardeeville, Wis.) skipped their teams to 3-3 records.
