2017 Senior National Championships underway

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The defending women’s champs picked up right where they left off last season as Norma O’Leary’s Minnesota rink opened the 2017 USA Curling Senior National Championships on a winning note.

O’Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.) and teammates Linda Christensen (Duluth, Minn.), Mary Shields (Duluth, Minn.), and Lucy DeVore (Superior, Wis.) defeated Susan Carothers of Alaska, 9-3, to begin round robin play last night at the Evergreen Curling Club in Beaverton, Ore. Ten women’s teams are competing in a preliminary round robin. In other games in the opening draw, North Dakota’s Beth Bohlman rink defeated the hometown team skipped by Karen Fairley (Tigard, Ore.), 11-9. Patti Lank’s team posted an 11-4 victory over Carol Ann Naso’s Arizona-based team to round out the action. The women’s teams return to the ice today at 10 a.m. PT. Seventeen men’s team are at the Centerville Curling Club competing in the 2017 USA Curling Senior Men’s National Championship. The first draw got underway this morning in Centerville, Wis. The 17 teams are split into three pools for the preliminary round robin. Two-time champion Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.) led his team to a 7-5 triumph over Dave Foley’s Wisconsin rink. Mike Farbelow (Minneapolis, Minn.) is skipping last year’s champions this season. Farbelow and his team of Geoff Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.), Tim Solin (Mahtomedi, Minn.), Pete Westberg (Woodbury, Minn.), and Jeff Annis (Mapleton, Minn.) got past Brian Brenengen’s Wisconsin rink, 8-4. Past champion Dennis Mellerup led his New York team to an 11-1 victory over Colorado’s Jerry Van Brunt rink. Duluth’s Seppo Sormunen picked up a 6-5 win over Paul Matzke’s rink from Wisconsin to round out the first draw action. The men’s teams return to the ice at 12 p.m. CT today.

The winning teams will represent the U.S. at the 2017 World Senior Championships April 22-29 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The Senior National Championships have been contested since 2002. The U.S. men have gone on to win the world title three times since (2002, 2010, 2015) while the highest finish for the American ladies has been bronze (2015, 2014, 2007, 2004, 2002).
