Judicial Hearing Panel dismisses 2018 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Mixed Doubles Curling complaint

Competitors Maureen and Peter Stolt, of Plymouth, Minn., filed a grievance with the USA Curling Judicial Committee on Dec. 1 after their team had not been selected to compete in the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Mixed Doubles Curling, taking place Dec. 13-17 in Blaine, Minn.

Five teams qualified directly for the Trials through the 2017 U.S. Mixed Doubles National Championships. The USA Curling Olympic Team Selection Committee had the responsibility of determining three discretionary team selections for the Trials according to selection procedures as first published in July 2016. Criteria for determining discretionary selections included international and national performance and results, and the committee’s determination of maximizing USA’s chances for international competitive success in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

A USA Curing Judicial Hearing Panel presided over an expedited review and hearing process, given that the Trials start Dec. 13 and the relief sought by the Stolts included the replacement of one of two discretionary selection teams. This process included a hearing earlier today. Based upon the written submissions, the testimony/discussion at the hearing, and the arguments of the parties, the Hearing Panel unanimously decided that the Stolts have not met the required burden of proof to show that a selection procedures violation occurred, and dismissed the complaint.

Given this decision, the discretionary selections stand. The Stolts do have the right to appeal the decision pursuant to Section 15.11 of the USCA By-laws and Section 9 of the U.S. Olympic Committee By-laws.

The team that wins the Trials will earn a spot on the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team, with final approval by the United States Olympic Committee. The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 will take place Feb. 9-25 in South Korea, where the U.S. will be among a field of eight teams competing for gold in the Olympic debut of the mixed doubles discipline.
