CURLING: Five teams remain undefeated at 2008 USA Curling Senior National Championships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 17, 2008 Five teams remain unbeaten at 2008 U.S. Senior Nationals (HIGHLAND PARK, Ill.) - Four draws are completed, and five teams still remain undefeated after Thursday morning's action at the 2008 USA Curling Senior National Championships at the Exmoor Curling Club. David Russell's 2005 U.S. senior national champion team improved to 2-0 with a comeback win over George Austin's New York team, 6-5. Trailing 5-2 going into the final end, Russell (La Crosse, Wis.) and teammates Bill Rhyme (Green Bay, Wis.), Mark Swandby (Madison, Wis.) and Dave Carlson (Portage, Wis.) scored four points to grab the win. Austin's team falls to 1-1 after an impressive 7-1 win last night over Seppo Sormunen's team that includes three of the defending senior champions. The Sormunen rink bounced back with an 11-2 win over Walter Ehlert's Wisconsin team this morning. Stuart Graves led his Massachusetts team to a 6-0 win over Minnesota's Lionel Locke to improve to 2-0. Graves (Pembroke, Mass.) and teammates Dave Fink (Franklin, Mass.), Doug Burchesky (Walpole, Mass.) and Keith Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.) never had the last rock advantage in this match but stole six straight points forcing Locke's team to concede. In other action this morning, Jeff Wright's Illinois team got into the win column with a 9-4 victory over David Garber's Wisconsin team. Wright (Libertyville, Ill.) and teammates Nils Johansson (Highland Park, Ill.), Mike Griem (Lake Bluff, Ill.), Bob Alsteen (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Bob Moulton (Lake Forest, Ill.) stole five points in the first two ends and hung four points in the sixth end to keep Garber's team chasing. The Paul Pustovar and Brian Simonson rinks from Minnesota along with Alaska's Leland Rich team are undefeated in Pool A.
