The trophies for USA Curling’s newest championship were donated by the family of Chris Moore, a past president of the United States Curling Association (USCA) who passed away from cancer while serving his term, via the Chris Moore Legacy Fund. A special Spirit of Curling Award also will debut at the U18 Championships honoring Garland Legacie of North Dakota, a USCA ice technician who also passed away from cancer. This award, which will be voted on by the coaches at the U18 Championship and finalized by the event’s chief umpire, will be presented during the closing ceremony on Sunday.

The Spirit of Curling Award, in memory of Garland Legacie

The Spirit of Curling is a commonly used term in the sport. It normally refers to the respect curlers show, not only to one another, but also to the sport itself. It means that the saying that a curler would rather lose than win unfairly. Garland carried the Spirit of Curling throughout his life wherever he was at. This award is being given to a curler, who not only loves the sport, but also shows great respect and camaraderie to curlers, ice makers, officials, the USCA, friends, volunteers, family members, members of curling clubs, and fans. Garland liked the competition of the sport, and also enjoyed his curling friends.
