Local boxers highlighted at Golden Gloves qualifier
ALTADENA — A third-round standing eight count on Sunday night had all but guaranteed Terry Washington spot in the California Golden Gloves state tournament.
He won, but Washington, 18, is thinking further ahead than just eight seconds. The San Bernardino amateur boxer has big plans, just like many others at Sunday’s Golden Gloves Southern California qualifier finals at Alta Loma Park.
“I’ll be a world champion someday, that’s a promise,” Washington said. “This is officially my last year of amateurs, so I really want to be a Golden Gloves champion. And today I’m a Golden Gloves district champion.”

On Friday, Feb, 10, a sold-out crowd of more than 260 attendees assembled at the Kenilworth Veterans Center to watch 11 amateur bouts refereed by officials of the NJ Association of USA Boxing.
The evening generated gross proceeds of more than $63,000 for the club’s scholarship fund from ticket sales, a 50/50 raffle, a live auction, and sponsorships by two local businesses. These results vastly exceeded all previous years’ totals.

Turlock native and Dutcher Middle School student Marques Tovar is officially a two-time National Silver Gloves winner, taking home the boxing title for the second consecutive year over earlier this month in Independence, Missouri. Competing at 95 pounds, Tovar competed in two fights, winning both by unanimous decision to once again clinch the championship at the nationwide tournament.
“It just feels nice winning it twice and it being back-to-back,” said Tovar. “I did what I needed to do and it just feels really good.”
With 2 national championship wins, Cora Thomas is lighting up amateur boxing
ST. ALBANS – When I took the first few jabs from Cora Thomas inside the boxing ring, I could feel her strength. But don’t take my word for it, take her trainers.
“When I held the hand pads for the first time I was like, this girl has real power,” said Thomas’ longtime head coach Hans Olson. “You don’t see boys 14 [or] 15 years old hitting like that. She was an 11-year-old girl hitting like that. So you knew she had something right off the bat. You could tell.”
Cora is now 16 years old and hitting even harder.
