2013 Physicians Symposium Memo

Jan. 31, 2013, 1:25 p.m. (ET)

This year the Ringside Physicians’ course and certification exam will be held June 26-29  in conjunction with 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships in Mobile, Alabama.  The event venue location is Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center; lodging and meeting location is the Hampton Inn & Suites.

It is anticipated that you will be able to earn up to 24 hours of category I CME credit approved by the American Academy of Family Practice.  In addition to the didactic sessions, there may also be time for teaching and observation at pre-bout physicals and at ringside.

You are welcome to arrive on June 24th as the boxing tournament begins on the 25th.  A June 25th arrival is recommended if you are coming just for the course which starts the morning of June 26th.  Later arrivals are also acceptable with credit hours being granted for the time actually spent.  The exam may be taken without attending the course, but course participation is highly recommended.

Any licensed MD or DO may participate in this course.  This includes those who are in residencies or fellowships.  Membership in USA Boxing is required, but can be done at the time, if necessary, and is free. Non-physician attendance is also welcomed, but cannot lead to certification and CME credit may not apply.

*IMPORTANT* - to take the certification exam, you need to have been a USA Boxing member for three (3) years total, it’s not necessary that the years are in succession.  Two (2) letters of recommendation are also required – one from your Local Boxing Committee (LBC) president and another from other USA Boxing personnel. You must also have performed as lead physician at three (3) events.  If you were the only doctor, you were the lead physician.

Even if you are not yet eligible to take the certification exam, the course is very instructive and should make you feel much more at ease as a ringside doctor.  In fact, I encourage physicians to take this course early in their ringside career so as to become familiar with our rules and practices and to become knowledgeable in our sport from the start.

Please pass this invitation along to any of your colleagues who might be interested.
