USA Boxing Board of Director President Tyson Lee Running for AMBC President

By USA Boxing | Sept. 28, 2021, 1:45 p.m. (ET)

USA Boxing Board of Director President Tyson Lee announced he is running to become the President of the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Board of Directors.

“I am very excited and humbled about the opportunity to run for President of the AMBC,” said Lee. “It is long overdue that the United States direct its knowledge and resources to partner directly with the other countries in our continental federation to help grow the sport of amateur Olympic-style boxing in the Americas, as well as provide their members the opportunities to lead the way on the international stage.”

“I look forward to speaking with as many of the countries as possible leading into the election to continue to learn more about their ideas and views on how we can continue to push AMBC to be a worldwide leader in the sport.”

Lee, who has been an Independent Director and President of USA Boxing’s Board of Directors since 2019, brings years of leadership experience to the AMBC, as he is the current President and CEO of Veteran Industries and was a captain in the United States Army. He also graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and foreign languages. During his time at West Point, Lee made the Regimental All Start Boxing Team for three years and would go on to win three state amateur titles while stationed in Hawaii.

“Tyson has been a tremendous leader for the USA Boxing Board of Directors, as well as all 40,000 members of our organization,” stated Mike McAtee, USA Boxing Executive Director. “He joined the USA Boxing Board of Directors in 2019 after the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee required USA Boxing Board of Directors to make changes to its leadership culture, much like AIBA is facing today. Tyson has been successful at leading the changes to our governance culture and I believe he will help do the same as the AMBC President and AMBC representative on the AIBA Board of Directors.”

“As the Vice President of the AMBC, I would be honored to work alongside Tyson to help find resolutions to the challenges the AMBC, as well as boxing around the world, face today,” said Ray Silvas, AMBC Vice President. “My years of experience with the AMBC and AIBA, and Tyson’s fresh eyes on things could help bring AMBC and boxing around the world back to its glory days.”

Lee will be looking to work alongside all those in the AMBC on a variety of topics including, but not limited to:

• Fighting to save Olympic-style Boxing
• Change of AIBA Leadership as required by the IOC’s Lalovic Report
• International events and participation
• Training and clinic opportunities for coaches and officials
• Developing and growing boxing at the local level

Elections for the AMBC Board of Director President will take place on Sept. 30 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The AMBC, which is the Continental Federation for all countries in North America, South American, Central America and the Caribbean, was formed in 2009 as their own organization, with their own bylaws, Board of Directors and funding in accordance with the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) bylaws and policies.
