USA Boxing continued their winning ways during the fifth day of action at the 2021 Elite Men’s World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, going 2-0 for the day.
Heavyweight Jamar Talley (Camden, N.J.) began his World Championships run in dominating fashion over Parviz Karimov of Tajikistan.
Talley controlled all three rounds of the bout, showing a great deal of skills he has in his arsenal, from his jab, power punches and body work. At the end of the first round, he took all five judges’ cards, which saw two judges give him the round by a score of 10-8. The dominance continued in the second and included another 10-8 score from one judge.
By the final round, Talley had a strong lead, and just needed to stay in control to take his first victory. The American did exactly that, advancing him to a round of 16 matchup on Sunday, Oct. 31 against Moldova’s Andrei Zaplitini.
Obed Bartee-El (Harvest, Ala.) picked up his second win of the tournament by way of unanimous decision in the evening session. The light middleweight started the first round of tonight’s bout against Italy’s Francesco Faraoni at a much faster pace than his opening bout, leading to him to take four of the five judges’ cards and the early lead.
Bartee-El continued to show dominance in the ring in the second and third round, grabbing all five judges’ cards to take the overall decision, 5-0, to advance to a round of 16 bout with 2020 Olympian Arman Darchinyan of Armenia.
Three members of Team USA, Rahim Gonzales (Las Vegas, Nev.), Vershaun Lee (Rock Island, Ill.) and Jordan Panthen (Kapolei, Hawaii), will take to the ring for the first time of these Championships tomorrow. Click here for bout sheets and to watch live.
