USA Boxing announced today that the 2020 USA Boxing National Championships, scheduled to take place Dec. 6-12 in Lake Charles, La., will be relocated following the recent impact of Hurricane Laura to the city.
“As a Gulf Coast resident for 20 years, I have witnessed firsthand the devastation that hurricanes and tropical storms can have on our communities, and waking up to see the photos of the destruction in Lake Charles, my heart broke,” stated Michael Campbell, USA Boxing Events and Operations Manager. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all of us as they recover.”
“The city of Lake Charles exceeded our expectations during last year’s National Championships and Olympic Trials, and returning in 2020 was an absolute no brainer,” he continued. “Unfortunately, they must now focus on recovery for their residents and rebuilding their city. Our commitment to this great city remains and when the time is right, we shall return to what we anticipate being an even greater travel destination.”
Due to COVID-19 and being the sole USA Boxing tournament in 2020, this year’s National Championships will be an open tournament, with a minimum bout requirement, for pee-wee to elite divisions. Continue to check USABoxing.org for bout requirements and high-performance selection procedures in the coming weeks.
The National Office is currently in contact with different possible host cities and will be announcing the new location in the coming weeks. More information, including a new check-in process that will help our membership and other tournament information will be released soon.
