Perez Grabs Team USA’s Lone Victory During First Day of 2020 Boxam Tournament

Team USA returned to international competition this morning at the 2020 Boxam Tournament in Castellon, Spain with mixed results.

Flyweight Abraham Perez (Albuquerque, N.M.) picked up the American’s lone victory of the day. Perez grabbed a split decision victory over Roger Smith Rivera of Peru to advance to the second day of preliminaries tomorrow, where he will be against Spain’s Joan Manuel Torres Valdez.

Delante Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio) and Joseph Hicks (Grand Rapids, Mich.) fell short of advancing to the next round of competition after taking split decision losses to Hugo Micallef of Monoco and Entrena Miguel Cuadrado of Spain, respectively. The fourth member scheduled to compete today, Bruce Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), lost by walkover.  

Joining Perez tomorrow will be Anthony Herrera (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Andrea Medina (San Diego, Calif.). Follow all the action by clicking here. Competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST.
