Team USA went 2-1 today in Ekaterinburg, Russia at the 2019 World Championships.
2016 Youth World Champion Delante Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio) received an extra day of rest after winning his bout against Italian Gianluigi Malanga by walkover. Johnson will compete tomorrow against Bobo-Usmon Baturov of Uzbekistan, the third-seeded boxer in the tournament, for a spot in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Super heavyweight and Team USA Captain Richard Torrez Jr. (Tulare, Calif.) picked up his first win of the tournament after taking all five judges’ cards over Kumar Satish of India. The 2016 Youth World Championships’ bronze medalist will return to the ring tomorrow to face Croatia’s Marko Milun.
Middleweight Javier Martinez’s (Milwaukee, Wis.) World Championships run came to an end today following a hard-fought battle against the tournament’s third-seeded Tursynbay Kulakhmet of Kazakhstan. Martinez leaves his first World Championships with a top 16 ranking.
It will be a busy day for the Americans tomorrow, with Michael Angeletti (Springs, Texas) and Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) joining Johnson and Torrez. USA Boxing’s National Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.), National Assistant Coach Kay Koroma (Colorado Springs, Colo.), as well as assistant coaches Tim Back (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Joe Guzman (Fountain, Colo.), have been guiding Team USA throughout their time in Russia.
