Team USA Boxing went 3-1 for the second consecutive day at the 2019 Silesian Women’s Championships in Gliwice, Poland to win their second bronze medal and advance a total of 10 boxers to tomorrow’s championship bouts.
Priscila Medina (Los Angeles, Calif.) started off the American team with another dominating performance to take all five judges cards over Greece’s Eleni Cholidi, while teammate Sierra Martinez (North Providence, R.I.) took her own unanimous decision win against Barbara Megyeri of Hungary to both advance to their first international final.
2018 Youth World Champion Iyana Verduzco (Los Angeles, Calif.) showed why she is one of the best youth boxers in the world with her performance against Poland’s Lena Szyrqinska. The referee stopped the bout in the second round, which advanced the bantamweight to the final, where she will go for her third international gold medal.
Ariana Carrasco (Las Cruces, N.M.) lost a heartbreaking 4-1 decision against Nikolina Boke of Latvia in her international debut. Carrasco will not leave Poland emptyhanded, as she earned a bronze medal for her effort.
Boxing National Junior and Youth Head Coach Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.), as well as assistant coaches Alexander Duque (New York, N.Y.), Edward Ochoa Jr. (Gilbert, Ariz.), Nora Trujillo (Richmond, Texas) and Chadrick Wigle (Colorado Springs, Colo.) have guided the young American team throughout the week.
