June 11, 2019, 10:51 a.m. (ET)

Pineweight Richard Fernandez Jr. (San Antonio, Texas) was the lone American to step into the ring for today’s first round of preliminary bouts at the 2019 Bornemissza Tournament in Eger, Hungary. A complete list of Team USA’s first opponents can be seen below.

The reigning USA Boxing National Champion put on a dominating performance from the very first bell against Kevin Schmiguelcz of Hungary to grab his first international win. Fernandez will return to the ring tomorrow, where a victory will advance him to Thursday’s semifinals and clinch his first international medal for Team USA.

National Junior and Youth Coach Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.) is leading the team in Hungary, with Edward Ochoa Jr. (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Pete Rojas Jr. (Grand Prairie, Texas) assisting him.

Team USA sent a team of 12 boxers to the 69th edition of the Bornemissza Tournament. A total of 23 nations and 290 boxers from four different continents are competing this week.
