Team USA Has Successful Second Day of 2019 Strandja Tournament

USA Boxing’s elite boxers had another successful day in the ring at the 2019 Strandja Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.


Team USA began the second day going 3-2 in the morning session. Lightweights Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) and Amelia Moore (Alexandria, Va.) continued their winning ways to advance to the next round of competition. Ellis took all five judges cards over Australian Ella Boot, while Moore took a 4-1 victory against Rebecca Nicole of Italy.


2018 Elite Women’s World Championships bronze medalist Naomi Graham (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made her tournament debut with a win over Brazil’s Flavia Figueiredo. Graham will join both Ellis and Moore back in the ring on Sunday’ for their quarterfinal bouts.


Bantamweight David Navarro (Los Angeles, Calif.) kicked off the second session of the day with a dominating performance over Poland’s Dorian Mospinek in his elite international debut. Navarro returns to the ring tomorrow for a matchup against Mirco Jahiel Cuello, 2018 Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist.


2017 Elite World Championships bronze medalist Troy Isley (Alexandria, Va.) and 2018 USA Boxing Elite National Champion Javier Martinez (Milwaukee, Wisc.) closed out the day by taking unanimous decisions over Morocco’s Tarik Allali and Switzerland’s Angel Roque, respectively. Both middleweights will return to the ring tomorrow for the second day of preliminaries.


Two-time World Champion Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.) and flyweight Abraham Perez (Albuquerque, N.M.) made their elite international debut in the morning session. Both fell short in tough bouts to advance to the next round of the tournament. 2018 Standja Tournament Champion Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) and Dalis Kaleiopu (Waianae, Hawaii) boxed in the light welterweight division for this tournament, with both falling short in the evening session to end their tournament run.


The third day of the 70th edition of the Strandja Tournament will be another full day for Team USA, as a total of 12 boxers will step into the ring, including 2017 World Championships silver medalist Duke Ragan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and 2018 USA Boxing Elite Male Boxer of the Year Richard Torrez Jr. (Tulare, Calif.). There will be three sessions tomorrow, 2:00 a.m. MST, 6:00 a.m. MST and 9:30 a.m. MST. A full list of boxers competing tomorrow can be seen below, as well as bout sheets here.


The American delegation, which is being led by USA Boxing Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.), as well as USA Boxing National Assistant Coach Kay Koroma (Colorado Springs, Colo.), brought one of the largest teams in USA Boxing history to compete alongside over 250 boxers from over 30 different countries to kick off the year. Rasheen Ali (Cleveland, Ohio), Tim Back (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kevin Benford (Cincinnati, Ohio), Joe Guzman (Fountain, Calif.) and Christine Lopez (Rowlett, Texas) are serving on the coaching staff.
