Team USA will have six boxers compete in today’s finale of the 2019 Pan American Qualifiers after the second day of semifinals in Managua, Nicaragua.
Only three of the six Americans expected to compete yesterday had to step in the ring following walkover wins for Troy Isley (Alexandria, Va.) and Delante Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio), sending them straight to the finals and to the 2019 Pan American Games this summer in Lima, Peru.
Two of those three members of Team USA were successful, with Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) and Oshae Jones (Toledo, Ohio) taking unanimous decision victories over their opponents to land their spot in the finale, as well as qualifying to compete in Peru.
Duke Ragan (Cincinnati, Ohio), 2017 World Championships silver medalist, lost a close 3-2 decision against Jean Caicedo of Ecuador to advance to the tournament, while Richard Torrez Jr. (Tulare, Calif.) lost due to a walkover. Both boxers will leave Nicaragua with a bronze medal and with the opportunity to redeem themselves this summer at the Pan American Games.
Joining the four boxers in today’s finals are Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) and Virginia Fuchs (Houston, Texas), who qualified after victories in their respective semifinal bouts on Monday.
Naomi Graham (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up USA Boxing’s first bronze medal of the tournament on Monday.
Boxing begins today at 4:00 p.m. MST and can be followed by clicking here.
